Zabu encountered a younger boy named Kevin Plunder as he was about to be attacked by a group of Male-Apes. Zabu saved Kevin, and the two grew to become companions. Zabu guarded the boy as he grew to adulthood, and eventually took about the identify Ka-Zar, meaning "Son of your Tiger".
